Gangotri Chardham Yatra

Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the Gangotri chardham yatra is located above 3100 meters of sea level. A popular Hindu pilgrim site, the Gangotri dham is the origin of river Ganga. It is believed that is here that river Ganges was originated when Lord Shiva released the river from the lock of his hair. An integral part of the chardham yatra circuit, the gangotri chardham is an important spiritual destination for chardham pilgrims.

Situated in Uttarkashi district in Uttrakhand, the Gangotri temple has been built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gurkha general, in the nineteenth century. The gangotri char dham is often visited after yamunotri chardham yatra. The gangotri yamumotri chardham yatra is one of the significant pilgrim visits for any Hindu visiting Badrinath Kedarnath dham.

As pilgrims move from yamunotri chardham yatra located in the western region of Garhwal hills for Gangorti char dham, Uttarkashi is the base camp. It takes 4hours by road to reach the temple from Uttarkashi. However, the Gangotri temple is closed after Diwali up to April. During this time, the deities are carried and kept for worship at the Mukhba village, near Harsil.

An exciting tourist spot, the extreme weather conditions, however, make it unfavorable for tourist to visit any of the chardham sites during the winters. Thus, pilgrims need to properly plan the trip before visiting any of these places.

The scenic pilgrimage in the lands of the Himalayas is the most holy place where Ganga, touched our mother earth for the very first time. As per mythology, Goddess Ganga, appeared in the form a river to clear the sins of king Bhagirath’s predecessors.  Ganga River begins at Gangotri which literally means Ganga Uttari.

Gangotri Temple: This 18th century temple is located near the place where, according to legend, King Bhagirath used to worship Lord Shiva at the sacred stone. The stone slab is known as Bhagirathi Shila, on which King Bhagirath is believed to have meditated.

Submerged Shivling: This is a natural rock sunken in the river. According to mythology, this is the place where Lord Shiva sat when he received Ganga in his tangled hair lock. It is visible only in winters  when there is a decline in water level.

Kedar Ganga Sangam: Approximately a hundred yards from the Ganga Temple, flows the river Kedar Ganga. Starting from the Kedar Valle, this river meets the Bhagirathi on its left bank.

Kedar Tal : This magnificent and captivating lake is located at a distance of about 18 Kms. from Gangotri, negotiable through a tough and rough mountain trail.

Dayara Bugyal : Bugyal means “high altitude field,” The road to Dayara Bugyal branches off near Bhatwari, a place on Uttarkashi-Gangotri road about 28 Kms. from Uttarkashi.

Sat-Tal : Sat-Tal, means seven lakes, is situated just above Dharali, 2 Kms. away from Harsil. A 5km trek is worthwhile, as this group of lakes is situated in the middle of beautiful natural surroundings. Also offers lovely camp sites.
