10 Days South Indian Temple Pilgrimage Tour

Post breakfast a whole day will be utilised for the city tour of Chennai. Chennai, the capital city, aka the ‘Gateway to the South’ represents a culture that is evidently different from northern India. The places to visit are Kalakshetra, a school of art and music that boosts proponents of Bharatnatyam, Carnatic music, traditional weaving and designing; Fort St. George built in 1653 during British reign in India, now houses the Secretariat and Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu; St. Mary’s Church, the oldest Anglican Church in India with its premises; Sri Parthasarathy Temple built by the Pallavas in the 8th century AD; Kapaliswara Temple, Mylapore also an eighth century Pallava Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva; San Thomas Cathedral Basilica rebuilt in 1606 as a cathedral and in 1896 it was made a basilica; and Theosophical Society – the world headquarters of the Theosophical Society formed to encourage the study of comparative religion philosophy and science. At the end of the day the group will be given rest at hotel for night stay and relaxation.

Post an early breakfast the tour for the renowned Tirupati Temple will begin. A visit to Srikalahasti will be there and further will leave for Tirupati. After arrival check into the hotel.

A fresh-n-up will be given and then will proceed for Tirupati Temple Darshan.

Tirupati is located in Andhra Pradesh. Tirupati is an antique Hindu temple having historical references in Puranas. The temple of Lord Venkateswara is located on the Tirumala hill and Tirupati is at the footsteps of the Tirumala hills. Every day around 1 lakh people visit this place. It has a great reputation for one of the eminent temples.

Temples located in and around Tirupati include Sri Padmavathi Devi temple at Tiruchanoor, Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Srinivasa Mangapuram. According to lore, Lord Venkateswara stayed here after his marriage with Sri Padmavathi Devi, before proceeding to Tirumala. Govindaraja Swamy Temple, Saint Ramanujacharya blessed this temple in 1130 AD. Kapila Theertham in Tirupati town at the base of Tirumala Hills dedicated to Lord Siva, Sri Kodandaramaswami Temple, Tirupati built by Chola kings during the tenth century AD, Sri Kalahasteeswara Temple at Srikalahasti and Sri Kalyana venkateswara swamy temple at Narayanavanam (40 km from Tirupati). Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy and Sri Padmavathi Ammavari, daughter of Akasa Maharaja were married here.

Again an Overnight stay at hotel.

A drive to Pondicherry will take place after a healthy breakfast. Post arrival check in to the hotel. In the afternoon a tour of the city of Pondicherry will begin. Even though the French influence is gradually diminishing, Pondicherry holds a few Gallic accents. Pondicherry’s main sights are the Rai Nivas, the Pious Heart Church and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The ashram retreat was founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo after whose death the spiritual authority passed to one of his disciples, a French woman is known as the Mother. The Mother was also instrumental in founding the city of Dawn Auroville, 10 km from Pondicherry. Its original charter aimed at creating a city of the future where people from India and abroad could live and work together in a divine environment.

Evening transfer to the hotel and again a stay at the hotel to sit back and relax.

After breakfast a drive to Trichy, on the way a  visit to Tanjore. Upon arrival check-in the hotel. After fresh-n-up temple tour of Thanjavur.

The home of Carnatic music, musical instruments, dance and traditional handicrafts, Tanjore (Thanjavur) is renowned for the Brahadeeswarar Temple. The temple was erected more than a thousand years ago by the Chola King Raja Rajan and is an architect’s marvel. The Art Gallery and the Saraswathi Mahal Library are also well-known places of interest.

Overnight stay at hotel.

After breakfast drive to Madurai will begin. During the course of the journey a visit to Srirangam, which is an island, 5 km from Trichy. Surrounded by the Kaveri water is a 600 acres island town enclosed within the seven walls on the gigantic Sri Ranganathaswami temple. There are not less than 22 gopurams, one of which is the tallest in India. The 72 m high 13 tiered gopuram dominates the landscape for miles around. The Rock Fort situated on the banks of the Kaveri River, Trichy’s most famed landmark is an 84 m high rock, one of the oldest in the world approx. 3,800 million years. The desirability is not for fort itself but the temple at the summit. 344 steps hewn out of rock lead to the top where are the engravings dating back to the 3rd century B.C.

A drive to Madurai will continue. Post arrival check-in the hotel. After fresh-n-up temple tour of Madurai.

Madurai, aka Athens of the East, is the second-largest city on the banks of the River Vigai. The city is believed to be more than 2500 years old. The city got its name from the drops of nectar (Mathuram) that fell from Shiva’s lochs when he came to bless its people for constructing a temple for him. Madurai, where the people wake up at the tune of hymns, is proud of the magnificent Meenakshi-Sundareswara Temple. Of its 12 gopurams, four of the tallest stand at the outer walls of the temple. The 48.8 m high southern gopuram is the most spectacular and have over 1500 sculptures. In the Ashta Shakti Mandapam inside the Meenakshi temple, the sculpted pillars tell the story of the beautiful princess of Madurai and her marriage to Lord Shiva. In the evening will move to a hotel and night stay at the hotel for relaxation and recalling all the best moments of the tour.

After breakfast will leave for Rameshwaram. After arrival check-in the hotel.

After fresh-n-up will proceed for the temple tour of Rameswaram, visiting Sri Ramanathaswami temple. The temple has 22 holy spirals which are believed to have medicinal properties. After darshan, visit the Ghanthamathana Parvatham which provides fine views of the island.

Later, visit Dhanushkodi, it is one of the Tirthas in the island of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. This is located beside the ghost town of Dhanushkodi at the eastern most tip of Rameswaram Island. Rama used his bow’s (Dhanush) end (Kodi) to break the bridge – Adam’s Bridge (hence the name). This bridge was used for his army to cross over to Lanka for the victorious war against Ravana. Later, return to the hotel for night stay and relaxation.

After breakfast drive to Kanyakumari. Upon arrival check into the hotel. In the evening an enjoyment restful at the beach. Overnight stay at hotel.

After taking a healthy breakfast will further proceed for a temple tour. Kanya Kumari is the southernmost end of Tamil Nadu, the end of Indian soil or the point where the three seas meet – the Bay of Bengal, The Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Later visit Kumariamman temple dedicated to the virgin Goddess Kanyakumari (Parvati) who stands guard over the country. The temple is built at the spot where the Goddess is believed to have waited for her consort, Lord Siva. Gandhi Memorial, constructed at the spot where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were kept for public view in an urn before a portion was immersed into the three seas. Vivekananda Memorial built on the Vivekananda Rock where the great Philosopher guide Swami Vivekananda went into meditation that transformed him into one of the most charismatic spiritual leader.

Later on will leave for Trivandrum. At arrival check-in the hotel. Overnight stay at hotel.

After breakfast will visit Padmanabhapuram Temple. The capital of Travancore until 1333, Padmanabhapuram is known for its fort which encloses, among other buildings, a palace and a temple. The palace has some important art relics while the Ramaswamy temple has exquisitely carved panels flaunting scenes from the Ramayana.

Later on dropping at the International airport for a successful conclusion of the tour.
